Language courses are taught by local instructors at the Curso de Lengua y Cultura Españolas para Extranjeros (ELE) at the University of Oviedo. ELE instructors, experts in their field, have extensive experience teaching American students. A crosscultural communications course, taught by an AHA staff member, provides you the opportunity to explore and process your study-abroad experience.

At the ELE, students generally take a total of 200 contact hours in the fall quarter and 250 contact hours in the spring semester. In addition, a U.S. visiting faculty member course offers 50 contact hours.

Summer language intesive sessions are also available.

All courses are taught in Spanish. You will take a placement exam in Oviedo to determine your level - intermediate and advanced in spring and fall or elementary, intermediate and advanced in summer. When your level has been determined you can then choose the other courses you wish to take.

Discover the philosopher, statesman and poet Gaspar de Jovellanos from Asturias, Spanis. Learn about his fight for Spanish independence from Napoleon France. Explore how, as a member of the resistance government, he advanced the possibility of a new constitution for an independent country.

Literature and Arts Connected to Spanish Civil War

Enhance your understanding of Spanish literature, arts and culture while focusing on the Spanish Civil War. Examine the debate of "The Two Spains" through short stories, romances, essays, poems, films and a drama.

SUMMER SESSIONS
AHA offers two intensive language sessions in July and August. These four-week sessions emphasize reading, writing, listening, and speaking competence and offer a total of 80 contact hours each of instruction at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Classes are held in the mornings allowing you the opportunity to enjoy the many leisure activities offered in the area during the summer. These programs includes field trips, guided visits, and other group activities.

ACADEMIC CREDIT
All courses offered in Oviedo are recognized and approved for academic credit by various NCSA member institutions. Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad adviser for more information.
