Transatlantic Currents: Ireland and America in the Modern Era (45 contact hours)
Examine the historical connections between the U.S. and Ireland over the past 200 years. Explore the impact of Irish emigration to America, from the early Scots-Irish settlers through the exodus of the Great Famine and the generations of emigrants who followed down to the end of the twentieth century through readings, lectures, and discussions.
Irish Literature and Cultural Politics (45 contact hours)
Analyze the way modern Irish writers have responded to the pressures of anglicization and modernization. Discuss literary reactions to social, ethnic, religious, and gender issues in modern Irish culture.
Screening Ireland: Irish Film into the 21st Century (45 contact hours)
Discover the cultural, social, and political contexts of Irish cinema. Examine key themes and issues in films made about and in Ireland. Explore the constructed notions of "Irishness" and how changes in Irish society since the 1970s are reflected in, and influenced by cinema.
EXCURSIONS
Ireland is your classroom—excursions to cultural and historical sites in and around Dublin are an integral component of the academic program. Past excursions included day trips to Leinster House, Wicklow, Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin’s art and literature museums, and theater performances.
