Classes take place at the Carl Duisberg Centren (CDC), a state-of-the-art educational facility located within walking distance of the city’s principal attractions. The CDC offers wireless internet, a computer lab, audio-visual equipment, and access to the libraries of the University of Cologne and the America House.

Each term a U.S. visiting faculty member teaches two specialty courses. Local instructors teach additional courses.

All courses, with the exception of German language, are taught in English. No prior German language is required.

European Union Culture and Institutions (45 contact hours)
Instructor: Juergen Gebhard, CDC director of studies
Explore the organization of the European Union in this introduction to contemporary European economic and political history. Examine recent developments in European politics and business. Debate current European affairs and present research in class. Visit corporate headquarters, trade associations, and the offices of the European Union in Belgium, Holland, and Germany. Experience first hand how Europe’s past influences the continent’s present economic and political life and behavior.

International Negotiations and Conflict Resolution

Instructor: Patrick Schmidt, intercultural consultant
Examine international negotiations and conflict resolution as applied to business. Explore such concepts as culture, management, and how cultural differences affect negotiations and conflict resolution styles. Consider how the value systems underlying behavior are culturally relative rather than absolute. Analyze negotiating styles, conflict resolution, business structures, and the sociocultural environment in Europe, America, and Asia.

Intermediate and Advanced German Language - Instructor: Dagmar Uckunkaya
Transition into life in Cologne and gain better access to German culture through practical language and conversation skill development. German language courses are offered at multiple levels. A language placement exam upon arrival will determine your level of study.

International Marketing
There is a unique and strategic significance of international marketing. Study the risks of marketing in different cultures and under different legal systems, explore a variety of approaches to market entry, examine the options for adapting products, promotion, prices and distribution to local markets and prepare a model plan for market entry.

Managing Organizations
Understanding organizational structures is key to successful business administration.  Explore classic and modern structural model and typologies, the relationship between corporate structures and corporate culture, the principles of corporate structure linking to corporate strategy, and the causes and motives of human behavior within organizations and corporations.

EXCURSIONS
Germany is your classroom—excursions to cultural and historical sites around the country are an integral part of your learning experience. A two-day excursion to Brussels, Belgium, and Maastricht, the Netherlands, focusing on the European Union institutions is an integral part of the program. This overnight field trip provides the opportunity to visit the birthplace of the Euro and experience modern Europe. Other excursions to exciting cultural and historical sites in and around Cologne are integrated into the coursework.

Not all courses listed are offered every term.

Course offerings are subject to change depending on enrollment and availability.

ACADEMIC CREDIT
All courses offered in Cologne are recognized and approved for academic credit by various NCSA member institutions. Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad adviser for more information.

INTERNSHIPS
The Cologne International Business Program offers internships to qualified students wishing to add a practical dimension to their study abroad experience. The internship option is a combination of hands-on experience and academic coursework.
