The last day of Lectures
Today is the last day of lectures. I only have my afternoon Sensory Science lab left, so I’m pretty excited about it, even if that means my time here is nearly up.
Last night, I went to a concert for the New Zealand Reggae-Roots band, Katchafire. It was an absolute blast. The music was great and the crowd was awesome. I had soo much fun. Except for the groove being different, the closest thing I can compare this concert to was an Offspring’s concert at the Roseland where the band hosed down the crowd with the fire hose, because we were all hot from dancing and there is no ventilation in the Roseland.
After Katchafire, Marianne and I started to wander home, but stopped for a lie down on the grass of the rugby field to look at the stars. Orion was out which made me even more happy, as that is my favorite constellation. Things just seem so in order for me when I see Orion in the sky. The bitch of it all is just that Dunedin has sooo many security lights. The lights makes it absolutely awesome for walking home at 3 o’clock in the morning, but really bite if you want to see stars without going for a drive.
The weather here is being really wacky, it was near freezing and snowed earlier this week. When we got out of the concert at 2am or so, it was hot out, hotter then when we had gone in at 10:30. The winds were and are crazy strong. So with all that heat, it is really quite sensational. In other words, I am loving it.
Here is a great site for New Zealand Music, you can see videos, listen to and download singles, and buy the whole albums. http://www.amplifier.co.nz/ . Plus the guys that run the site will answer questions like I sent them after I couldn’t remember anything but choruses to two songs. Here is what I sent:
Ok, so I have been digging around on the Amplifier site trying every possible combination I can think up, but I still can't find two songs I'm just crazy about. Here is what I can tell you: The first one has the phrase or some variety of "Can't do what I wanna do cause you weren't even born in the eighties" and the other one that's used on C4 has the phase, "Looking for my girl have you seen her".
From that, Rich was able to identify the artist and the song. “songs that make you go hmmmmm”,
Hey Holly, our team of experts up there think we've narrowed thing down for you. The song with the lyric "Can't do what I wanna do cause you weren't even born in the eighties", is off the new Deja Voodoo album Back In Brown, not sure of the songs title. The C4 one is by the Tutts, I think it's called K.
Unfortunately, one of the reasons I couldn’t find the songs is because they weren’t released as singles on Amplifier or haven’t been released on an album at all as is the case with "K" by the Tutts.
I’m going to go to the Deja Voodoo concert on the 8th of November with Steriogram, since I missed them last time they came to town. Steriogram has this awful song that I adore, which is going to be the theme song for my next summer barbeque: Whitetrash. Anyway, Dunedin is really great for live music, and that is one of the things I am really going to miss.
Tomorrow, I leave for a wine tour of central Otago, which will be fun as long as the gale force winds, which we are having, don’t push the 15-seater passenger van off one of the narrow mountain roads with no guard rails. It should be exciting one way or the other. If I make it through, I’ll report back and let you know all about the wines as well as posting some pictures.
