Dunedin Smells

by Holly Cooper last modified 2006-09-20 10:03

When I first got here, I mostly noticed what I thought of as the lack of smell compared to Portland, which generally smells like rain, or grass, or pine trees. But soon, I discovered Dunedin has it own rather unique smell(s).

By the campus, the smells varies between cooked vegetables, roasting coffee, and donuts.

If you go farther into Dunedin central, the smell of chocolate, caramel, marshmallow, and some times banana is often present, due to the Cadbury factory.

At The Octagon on a Saturday night, there is a very prevalent scent of beer and cigs.

When the wind is strong from the east, the ocean dominates the olfactory senses.

But now that spring is here, the place is mad with flowers, and cherry blossom perfume fills the air.

Daffodils and Honeysuckle add to the fragrance, and I breath deeply.

The winds may be strong, but they are blowing in the spring.
