Life and stuff
A general recap of the past few days
Hmm... I don't feel particularly inspired right now, so I don't expect you to become so by reading this either...
I heard someone use "bollocks" the other day... I enjoyed hearing it...
Sunday was a big football day in England. Liverpool played at Chelsea and Arsenal played at Manchester United. They called it Grand Slam Sunday because I guess those are the big four teams of English football (or at least four of the biggest teams)... Games played back to back on TV, lots of hype... Kind of a fun thing to watch.
Saturday night some of the people organized a photo scavenger hunt in Central London. Stuff like a red telephone booth, Big Ben, a fountain, with a beer can in a park... It worked out pretty well - there were 5 or 6 guys and 5 or 6 girls - and it didn't cost any of us any money (found the beer can on the street) which was a definite plus... Guys won, of course...
I did burn my mouth that night though... I was making sausages for dinner when I found out we were leaving for the scavenger hunt and I scarfed them down quickly, but the first one was still a little too hot... So right behind my teeth is a little tender right now... That's what I get, I guess...
Wednesday we go see Titus Andronicus at the Globe and Friday is a day-trip to Stonehenge and Bath. I'm definitely looking forward to that Friday trip. Stonehenge is a place I've always read about but have never been able to actually visit.
I've had all my classes now... Looks like weekly field trips in two of the three (Art & Architecture and South Asian Immigrants), and the other one (Modern Britain politics) might have one or two as well... I think they'll all turn out well.
Here's a bit of the slang and other differences between American English and British English I've noticed:
American/British
Umbrella/Brelly
Cauliflower/Cauly
Silverware/Cutlery
Football/Footy
Curb/Kerb
Shopping cart/Trolley
Chips/Crisps
Fries/Chips
Shot(=vaccination)/Jab
Also, pence (=cent) is commonly referred to as P. eg. - fifty pence = fifty p.
And no matter how hard I try, I can't get used to the whole driving on the left side of the road thing. I can't figure out which way to look at intersections and it always looks like there's only a passenger in the car, not a driver.
Cheers for now...
