About Me :)

A little about me (a student preparing to study in Segovia, Spain), and why I want to study in Segovia.

About Me :)

My first experience abroad in Rome, Italy. That's Saint Peter's Basilica behind me; it doesn't get much better than that.

HELLO EVERYONE!!!

My name is April Philpott.  I am from Switz City, which is a very small town in Southern Indiana.  My town has around three hundred people living there, and isn’t even big enough to have its own grocery store or bank.  I am also a senior at Indiana State University.  I have a double major and double minor; needless to say, I will be one of those fifth year seniors at ISU.  My majors are in English Education and Cross-Linguistics, with an emphasis on Latin and Spanish, while my minors are Classical Studies and Latin Teaching.  I realize Latin is a dead Language, but I love it anyways (except for when I have to translate Cicero with his thousands of dangling modifiers).

Actually, my first experience abroad was in a Latin class that went to Rome, Italy, for spring break.  We studied the classical elements in Rome and then went to Rome to see them in person.  It was an amazing experience and I discovered there really are some things which you can not learn from a textbook.  Seeing the marble of the Colosseum being used in Saint Peter’s basilica or that the floor pattern of Saint Paul’s basilica was the same as the Pantheon’s, made the history and culture we studied in class become alive and really make sense.

With one of my majors being in Spanish, studying in Spain will be a great opportunity for me to finish all my upper-level Spanish classes required for my major, practice my Spanish on a daily bases, and have a fun time being immersed in another culture.  When I first told my parents I was studying abroad in Segovia, Spain, my mom told me I must have an adventurous soul to want to spend an entire semester in a foreign country, whose native language is not my own.  I do have my worries about not being able to speak Spanish as well as I should or being stuck in a world and culture that is different from mine, but the excitement of all the things I will see and learn override any fears I may have. And I know this will be a life changing experience…no…ADVENTURE.
