Some day trips and weekend fun around Northern Spain

Traveling around Spain

Walking along the jetty in Llanes by the cube art

One of the greatest aspects of studying abroad is the many opportunities there are to travel around my host country. My friends and I can hop on a bus or a train and experience a new city anytime we want.

One of the weekend trips we have made a couple times is to the city of Gijon. Gijon is the largest city in Asturias and it is only a 20 minute bus ride. Gijon has a beautiful beach and it is great place to play futbol with the locals.

Another beach town nearby is Llanes. Llanes is a small, quaint town with more than 30 beaches and some of the most interesting beach art I've ever seen. Along the jetty in Llanes, there are nearly 100 cubes, all painted by local artists. The cubes were amazing, and everyone of them are different.

Another important historical landmark in Asturias is Covadonga. Covadonga is the patron saint of Asturias, and the site is made in her honor. We began our hike at the bottom of the hill, and walked up a cave, over a waterfall, and into the sanctuary of Covadonga. Its a beautiful site to have lunch and see one of the definitive places of Asturias.

The more I travel around Asturias, the more I understand and appreciate the things that Asturians hold dearly. They are proud of their religious monuments, beautiful parks, and immense amount of art. Asturias is a beautiful and disitinct region of Spain and I am excited to discover all that it has to offer.
